SYNTAGMA // 2011

// love me now // too late

A piece – never realised – about the Greek crisis.

In the summer just before the Greek political and economic crisis hit hard, I decided to create a work about the Greek constitution – or “Syntagma” – which is also the name of the square on which Parliament sits. As my research progressed and rehearsals began, alongside writer and actress Youla Boudali, the riots on Syntagma Square grew ever more violent and radical. This extreme everyday backdrop to our lives made any work of art seem inconsequential by comparison.

I decided to let my collaborators down, let the rehearsal space we had rented go, and cancel the show. Reality had outrun my inspiration. Strangely enough, a few months later we were informed that our government funding application for the show had been approved. We turned it down.

These two teasers are all that remain.
