THIS IS NOT A PIPE // 2011

OSMOSIS were invited to present one of their early experimental works – THIS IS NOT A PIPE – as part of the Greek National Theatre’s Takeoff Festival for promising young artists.

The work freely adapts a minute of dialogue from Woody Allen’s 1997 film “Deconstructing Harry”. Performed in complete darkness, this textual extract is the work’s sole performative tool – continually deconstructed and recomposed to create a small symphony of voices.

The interplay of signifier and signified lies at the heart of this experiment, that uses a minimum of means to speak about the multivalency of human communication and the polyphony of our times.

you son of a bitch // what’s wrong? // you sick sick sick sick fucking bastard // what’s wrong? // what is wrong? what do you think is wrong? you’ve been having a little bit of an affair with one of my patients, huh? // who? // don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about // I don’t // you know what I’m talking about don’t speak // I just talked to her, she told me the whole thing // who? // who? Amy // can I explain something to you? // no you cannot explain anything to me // will you calm down? // don’t tell me to calm down // what is wrong? // what is wrong? I treat this woman and you fuck her? // supposing I told you my fucking Amy was a disguised plea for more closeness with you // then I would say you are a mental case – this is bullshit, do you understand me? don’t play the victim // I’m as much a victim as you, you think that getting a blow job from a big-bosomed 26-year-old is a pleasurable thing for me? // you make me sick // you’re overreacting // are you trying to tell me that every week for the last four months you’ve been with her in a hotel? // that’s so crazy, no of course not, I rented an apartment // you son of a bitch

National Theatre Osmosis was invited to present one of their early experimental works at the Take Off Festival. Based on a 10-line extract from a Woody Alen movie script we created a small scale voice concert. This 30’ min sound creation was performed in complete darkness challenging the audience to translate the patterns generated at there own will.
